Jeremy Kurn

Biography

Music as a path of inquiry.

Music

Jeremy earned a B.A. in Music from the University of California, Davis, with an emphasis in composition and accompaniment, and continued his studies through the University of Exeter and the School for Improvised Music in New York. His professional career spans more than three decades of performing, accompanying, arranging, conducting, teaching, composing, and musical direction across classical music, jazz, funk, gospel, theater, orchestral music, and improvisation.

Improvisation & contemplative practice

Alongside his professional music career, Jeremy developed a long-term practice in meditation, qigong, contemplative spirituality, and altered states. During this period he explored how attention, embodiment, and improvisation change the experience of both playing and listening. Work with pianist Art Lande, the School for Improvised Music, and numerous improvisational projects helped move his musicianship toward increasingly open and responsive forms.

Responsive music

In the early 2000s, Jeremy began providing improvised piano during the hands-on bodywork sessions of Joel Alter, D.O. The music was not predetermined; it responded to the changing quality of the person, the practitioner, and the room. This became an important foundation for his later exploration of musical mirroring, embodied attention, and music as an active participant in healing and altered-state experiences.

Integration

Jeremy's current work integrates musicianship with long-term study of consciousness, psychology, philosophy of mind, comparative spirituality, cognitive science, ethnomusicology, and psychedelic culture. Through Reflexivity Studios, he is developing practices that use music and expanded states of awareness to explore creativity, healing, connection, and greater agency in the construction of experience.

Central question

How can becoming more aware of the processes shaping experience give us greater freedom to participate in what we become?
