The Flow Method
The Musical Flow Method.
A method for widening musical awareness. Begin with sound. Expand into the band. Then widen attention to include the people, space, and experience the music is serving.
Three movements
From playing to perceiving.
Loosen structure.
Hear more.
Free improvisation loosens habitual structures of meter, harmony, rhythm, and form so attention can move from prediction toward direct perception, sensation, and response.
Move as one sound.
Once individual playing loosens, attention expands into the ensemble. Rather than independently generating material, musicians locate themselves inside a shared musical field and allow the group sound to guide what happens next.
Hold the whole field.
In healing and ceremonial settings, the musician's awareness widens beyond the band. The music remains central, while attention also includes the participant, the physical space, and the larger experience unfolding around the sound.
The aim
Less control. More perception. Greater connection.
The Flow Method trains musicians to move from controlling musical material toward sensing and participating in a larger field of sound, relationship, and experience.
